On August 6, 2025, Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) 9.0 was officially released. The new version brings many significant improvements, particularly in the areas of storage, networking, and usability.

Based on Debian 13 "Trixie" and Linux kernel 6.14.8-2, Proxmox VE 9.0 provides a modern foundation for virtualization and container solutions.

🆕 The most important new features at a glance

✅ Updated software base

  • Debian 13 "Trixie" as the new foundation
  • Linux Kernel 6.14.8-2 for better hardware support
  • QEMU 10.0.2, LXC 6.0.4, ZFS 2.3.3, Ceph 19.2 (Squid)

💽 ZFS RAID-Z Expansion

With ZFS 2.3.3, the dynamic expansion of RAID-Z pools is now possible – without a complete rebuild. This is particularly useful in growth-oriented storage environments.

📦 Shared LVM Snapshots (Tech Preview)

New is the ability to create snapshots on thick-provisioned LVM volumes – ideal for shared storage via iSCSI or Fibre Channel.

🌐 SDN Improvements with Fabrics

Software-defined networking functionality has been expanded:

  • Introduction of SDN fabrics such as OpenFabric and OSPF
  • Better support for complex network topologies (e.g., spine-leaf structures)

🤝 Affinity & Anti-Affinity Rules

Affinity policies can now be defined for high-availability clusters:

  • Control whether VMs run on the same or different hosts
  • Improved resilience and optimized performance

📱 New Mobile Web Interface

The mobile user interface has been modernized:

  • Implementation using the Rust framework Yew
  • Faster loading times, better UI for smartphone use

🔁 Upgrade Options

An upgrade from Proxmox VE 8.x is possible. There are two ways to do this:

  1. In-place upgrade via the command line (after backup and preparation)
  2. Clean installation with the official ISO image

👉 Official Upgrade Guide

⚠️ Notes before upgrading

  • Create backups (e.g., with Proxmox Backup Server)
  • Disable third-party repositories
  • Check compatibility of Ceph or ZFS pools
  • Observe notes on breaking changes and deprecations

🧠 Conclusion

Proxmox VE 9.0 brings a wealth of features that appeal to both enterprise and home lab users. The new storage and networking features enable more flexible setups, while the updated system foundation ensures long-term stability.

A worthwhile upgrade for anyone who wants to run modern virtualization on a solid foundation.
